GI drugs study tips
As you study the GI drugs, think about the following:
1. How do OTC H2 blockers differ from prescription doses of H2 blockers? Dose? Uses?
2. For treatment of PUD or GERD, which class of drug is considered the drug of choice? Can they be used IV?
3. How are antacid different from acid-reducing drugs?
4. Which H2 blocker is associated with the most drug interactions and side effects?
5. Dispell the myths associated with antacids.
6. What are the most common side effects of each type of antacid?
7. Which antacid can have serious systemic complications?
8. Discuss bioavailability of other drugs when taken with antacids.
9. Why would the drug simethicone be given?
10. What is the difference between Carafate (sucralafate), antacids, and Cytotec (misoprostol)?
11. What is the most serious side effect of Reglan (metoclopramide), a prokinetic drug? What is a common side effect? Why would this drug be used?
12. What is the difference between the different classes of antidiarrheals (there are 4 classes)? Why would each be prescribed? What effect do these drugs have, if any, on bioavailability of other drugs? What are the common side effects for each? What patient teaching is needed for each? Which class is the most effective antidiarrheal?
13. What is the role of intestinal modifiers, such as lactobacillus? When would this drug be used?
14. For the laxatives (5) - how is each class different than the others? How is each class used? Are there any unique side effects with these drugs? Which ones are used to prevent straining, cleanse a bowel prior to colonoscopy, or to treat acute constipation? Which ones work very quickly and which ones take hours to work?
15. What is the difference between the classes of antiemetic drugs? Which class can cause EPS symptoms? Which classes can cause sedation? Which class is associated with minimal side effects?
